Reviews

Jancis Ronbinson - 17.5

Tendrils of lemon curd and red apple twist together with lemon and kumquat. Elegantly juicy on the sleek palate with sharp, zesty edges. Complex and refined, with a creamy agility that belies the rigid, racy temperament beneath.

Robert Parker - 96

The Westhofen 2023 Brunnenhäuschen Riesling GG has a deep, clear, precise, fresh and substantial nose of crushed limestone and salt. On the palate, this is dense and tremendously complex and mineral, supported by fine, ripe, elegant acidity. It’s astringent and powerful on the finish yet always exciting, delicate and with natural length and intensity. This great Riesling is one of the highlights of the vintage on the Rhine. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

Weingut Wittmann

Weingut Wittmann is one of the leading names in German wine, renowned for its precision-crafted, terroir-expressive Rieslings. Located in the village of Westhofen in Rheinhessen, the estate has a winemaking legacy that dates back to 1663. Over the centuries, the Wittmann family has cultivated an unwavering commitment to quality, culminating in their position today as one of the benchmarks for dry German Riesling.

Under the stewardship of Philipp Wittmann, the estate has become a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture in Germany. Since converting fully in the early 2000s, Wittmann has focused on sustainable vineyard practices that enhance soil health and amplify the unique characteristics of each site. This respect for nature and terroir is central to the estate’s philosophy.

Terroir

The Brunnenhäuschen vineyard is one of Rheinhessen’s most distinctive and elevated sites, located just above the famed Morstein vineyard on the limestone slopes near Westhofen. Classified as a Grosse Lage, this site combines altitude, exposure, and soil composition to produce some of the most refined and age-worthy dry Rieslings in the region.

It is characterized by its cooler microclimate and limestone-rich marl soils with a thin topsoil layer, which forces the vines to root deep into the bedrock. These conditions result in wines of great precision, tension, and minerality, often showing a cooler, more linear profile compared to the broader expression of Aulerde. The high elevation allows for promoting slow, even ripening and a remarkable balance between ripeness and acidity.
