François Raveneau
History & Vision
François Raveneau began estate bottling in the 1970s, at a time when most Chablis growers sold in bulk to négociants. That decision defined the domaine’s trajectory. Today, Bernard Raveneau and Isabelle Raveneau maintain the same approach: minimal intervention, extended élevage in used oak, and an uncompromising focus on site expression. Those looking to buy Raveneau Chablis online will find that access outside allocation remains rare — and that is precisely where Grandcru Grapes focuses.
Raveneau Chablis — Vineyard Holdings
The domaine holds parcels in Montée de Tonnerre, Butteaux, Chapelot, Vaillons, Blanchot, and Valmur, among others. Raveneau vinifies and ages each parcel separately. Because of this, the wines reflect the distinctions between sites with unusual clarity — a precision that becomes increasingly apparent with age.
Winemaking Style
Raveneau uses old Burgundy barrels for ageing, not to add oak character but to allow slow oxidative development. The wines rest on fine lees for an extended period, building texture and depth. Therefore, young Raveneau Chablis can appear closed and austere. However, given time, the wines open into some of the most site-specific expressions the appellation produces — mineral, saline, and precise.
Allocation & Access
Production is small and long-standing client relationships take precedence. As a result, Raveneau rarely appears outside allocation channels. Moreover, older vintages in good condition are infrequently available on the secondary market. When they do appear, demand is consistent and prices reflect that.
Relevance Today
Raveneau’s wines are bought primarily for cellaring, yet many buyers open them too early. Indeed, the Premier Crus often require a decade or more before the balance between acidity, minerality, and fruit resolves fully. For this reason, a mature Raveneau Chablis in its drinking window is a different proposition entirely from a young bottle — and a markedly rarer one. Our selection below is sourced outside allocation and spans several vintages and Premier Cru sites.
