Weingut Keller Westhofener Morstein Riesling GG 2020
Morstein is Keller’s most celebrated site — deep clay marl over limestone, southwest-facing, with the weight and structure that distinguishes it from the leaner Frauenberg. The 2020 is precise and reductive in its current phase: citrus, white peach, crushed stone, with the acidity and extract that suggest a long development ahead. This is not a wine for immediate drinking. The Morstein typically needs five to eight years from harvest before it begins to open.
Drink 2030–2045.

Reviews
James Suckling - 98
Extremely expressive nose with deep white-fruit, herbal and smoky aromas. Enormously concentrated, but very cool and pristine, thanks to the super-racy mineral acidity that gives the finish great power.
John Gilman - 98
Klaus-Peter Keller’s 2020 Morstein is everything one would expect from a great terroir in a great vintage, planted with old vines and crafted by a true master at the top of his game. The stunningly beautiful nose soars from the glass in a blaze of tart orange, pink grapefruit, salty limestone minerality, wild yeasts, dried flowers and a topnote of lemongrass. On the palate the wine is very, very pure, racy and full, with stunning depth in the mid-palate, great mineral drive on the backend, laser-like focus and perfect balance on the very, very long and youthfully complex finish. All this magical wine needs is bottle age! 2035-2100. (Jan/Feb 2022)
Vinous - 95
The intimations of both chalk dust and saline notes on the nose faintly bring Chablis to mind. The polished palate displays both oyster shell and oyster innards in its meld of chalky, saline, herbaceous and mouthwateringly animal-savory elements, along with a shimmering sense of citrus and mineral interaction. Zesty lemon and piquant kumquat add to the striking persistence a wine suited to setting the tonsils vibrating and milking the salivary glands. (Nov 2021)
Mosel Fine Wines - 94+
The 2020er Morstein Riesling, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is a bone-dry wine made from 75-year-old vines and low yields (under 30 hl/ha) in one single old Fuder. It offers an aromatic, intense, and very complex nose of herbs, pineapple, grapefruit, mint, ginger, and a hint of camphor. The wine captures one’s attention as it proves hugely intense, compact, and dense on the palate. Notes of lemon and citrus are wrapped into plenty of spices and add to the feeling of razor-sharpness which emerges into the long and tight finish. There is also a light phenolic and powerful presence. This hugely impressive but still very primary dry Riesling will require a couple of years to fully show its potential. There is clear upside potential if it manages to gain finesse over time. 2025-2035+. (Nov 2021)
Weingut Keller
Weingut Keller is based in Flörsheim-Dalsheim in Rheinhessen, farming a small portfolio of single-vineyard sites including Kirchspiel, Morstein, Hubacker, and Frauenberg. Klaus-Peter Keller produces Großes Gewächs from each — dry Rieslings classified at the top of the VDP hierarchy. Yields are extremely low; allocations are among the most restricted in Germany. The style across all sites is precise and reductive, built for long ageing.
Terroir
Morstein lies near Westhofen on southwest-facing slopes with records dating to the 13th century. The soils are deep clay marl over limestone — heavier and more water-retentive than the lighter limestone plateau of Frauenberg. That depth gives the wines their weight and extract. The southwest exposure maximises ripening; the clay moderates it. The result is Riesling with more body and slower development than Keller’s other GG sites — a wine that closes down in youth and requires patience before it reveals its full character.
What others say after opening the bottle
I like that I can buy good wines here without allocations. The bottles I’ve opened were exactly where they needed to be. Jannes his advice felt honest and personal, which helped me decide. Delivery was careful and straightforward. K. Loesberg
I spoke with Jannes before ordering because I wanted additional photos of the bottle, and that gave me confidence. The wine was ready to drink. Being able to buy single bottles for the occasion instead of full cases suits me well. Everything arrived perfect. T. Driessen
What I appreciate most is not having to guess anymore. I prefer to buy wines that are in the middel of their drinking window. Jannes's guidance was calm and helpful, and the delivery was handled with care. J. Annaert
Jannes helped me choose for a special food pairing, and the whole process felt easy and trustworthy. I don’t have a cellar to store wines for years. Buying loose bottles in their drinking window is a big advantage. Shipping was good. B. Denruyter
After opening too many wines too early in the past, this feels different. The timing has been spot on. I like the freedom of buying without allocations and choosing single bottles. Delivery has been consistently good. R. Bontemps
The advice from Jannes made the selection feel personal, not generic. The wine I ordered for Christmas was exactly as expected. I didn’t need a full case, so buying individual bottles works well. Everything arrived safely and on time. D. Smits
Great to enjoy wines without second-guessing. Jannes his advice helped narrow things down, and I appreciate being able to order just a few bottles. Delivery is good, quick and well handled. W. Snijders
This suits how I drink wine now. I don’t want to wait years or buy cases. The bottles arrive ready, the advice is solid, and the process feels dependable from start to finish. A. van Kempen
