Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale 2017

Ready — mature

The Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale 2017 is at an interesting point — the primary fruit still present but beginning to yield to something more complex. Red cherry, violet, forest floor, a mineral thread running through. The tannins are fine and well-integrated; the acidity keeps everything precise. This is a wine with structure remaining, but it does not need further patience.

Reviews

Robert Parker - 91

The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a little more introverted after its recent bottling, unwinding in the glass with a reticent bouquet of red berries, raw cocoa, sweet soil tones and dried flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with good depth at the core and a more structured, introverted profile than the Chambolle that preceded it. The missing ingredient here is a little time.

Vinous - 91

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has an open nose of red cherry, kirsch and desiccated orange peel, nicely defined if just needing a little more cohesion. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins, and very pure and modern in style. Silky in texture with a pinch of spice, this will require two or three years to develop more terroir expression. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Burghound - 92

A much earthier and less elegant nose features notes of various dark berries and a hint of game-like nuance. There is both good detail and a lovely underlying tension to the middle weight flavors that are not quite as refined but offer a bit more complexity on the lingering finish where the intensity and power really build from the mid-palate. This should amply repay mid-term cellaring.

Jacques-Frederic Mugnier

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is based in Chambolle-Musigny, with holdings across some of Burgundy’s finest appellations. Frédéric Mugnier’s approach in the cellar is restrained — minimal intervention, careful extraction, no excess. The Clos de la Maréchale was leased to Faiveley for decades and returned to Mugnier in 2004. Since then, the estate has worked to express the vineyard on its own terms — and the wines have progressively shown what that site is capable of.

Terroir

The Clos de la Maréchale sits at the southern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges, on gently sloping, east-facing terrain. The soils are limestone and clay with a gravelly component — good drainage, moderate moisture retention. The east-facing exposure gives morning sun and a cooler afternoon, which slows ripening and preserves aromatic precision. As a monopole, the vineyard is farmed as a single unit, which gives Mugnier complete control over timing and selection. The position within the appellation — further from the village grands crus, closer to Prémeaux — gives wines that sit between the weight of Nuits and the finesse of Chambolle.

Private Access, Without the Noise

Beyond the public selection, I occasionally source wines available in very small quantities — offered privately, or never formally listed. Through the Club Grandcru WhatsApp channel, these bottles are shared directly and selectively: mature vintages, single parcels, and bottles that never reach the open market. Early access is reserved for members.
