Richard Leroy Les Rouliers 2022

Ready — youthful

Richard Leroy Les Rouliers 2022 is a dry Chenin Blanc from a 0.7-hectare parcel on sandy gritstone schist in Rablay-sur-Layon. The 2022 growing season across the Loire was warm and early-ripening, producing wines with generous fruit weight and natural alcohol while retaining the structural backbone Chenin demands.

Expect the characteristic profile of Les Rouliers — saline tension, quince, almond, a mineral austerity from the schist — but with the broader texture 2022 typically delivered. Fermented dry and aged without sulphur addition; drink from now onwards, with good holding potential through 2031.

Richard Leroy

Richard Leroy came to winemaking without a family background in wine — an economics graduate who took on 2.7 hectares in Rablay-sur-Layon in the mid-1990s. After a decade of working to establish a premier cru hierarchy within the Anjou appellation, he concluded the classification system would not move.

In 2008, he declassified both cuvées to Vin de France rather than continue under an appellation he felt underserved the terroir. The estate produces two dry Chenin Blanc cuvées — Les Rouliers and Les Noëls de Montbenault — in very limited volume, with no sulphur used in the cellar and no bâtonnage.

Terroir

Les Rouliers comes from a single 0.7-hectare parcel situated between the Quarts de Chaume and Bonnezeaux appellations on the Layon hillsides. The soils are sandy gritstone schist — well-draining, with low organic matter and high mineral density. Schist retains heat during the day and releases it at night, moderating diurnal variation and supporting slow, even ripening. The underlying rock structure also contributes the saline, mineral tension that defines the cuvée’s style and distinguishes it from the volcanic rhyolite soils of Leroy’s second parcel, Les Noëls de Montbenault.

Private Access, Without the Noise

Beyond the public selection, I occasionally source wines available in very small quantities — offered privately, or never formally listed. Through the Club Grandcru WhatsApp channel, these bottles are shared directly and selectively: mature vintages, single parcels, and bottles that never reach the open market. Early access is reserved for members.
