Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale 2017

The Clos de la Maréchale 2017 is a poised and expressive Premier Cru from Mugnier’s historic monopole in the southern sector of Nuits-Saint-Georges. It opens with refined aromas of red cherry, violet and subtle forest spice, underpinned by a gentle mineral thread. The palate is elegant yet structured, combining supple fruit with fine, chalk-tinted tannins and a lifted freshness. The finish is long, pure and quietly powerful, showcasing the finesse and depth that define this singular vineyard.

Reviews

Robert Parker - 91

The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a little more introverted after its recent bottling, unwinding in the glass with a reticent bouquet of red berries, raw cocoa, sweet soil tones and dried flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with good depth at the core and a more structured, introverted profile than the Chambolle that preceded it. The missing ingredient here is a little time.

Vinous - 91

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has an open nose of red cherry, kirsch and desiccated orange peel, nicely defined if just needing a little more cohesion. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins, and very pure and modern in style. Silky in texture with a pinch of spice, this will require two or three years to develop more terroir expression. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Burghound - 92

A much earthier and less elegant nose features notes of various dark berries and a hint of game-like nuance. There is both good detail and a lovely underlying tension to the middle weight flavors that are not quite as refined but offer a bit more complexity on the lingering finish where the intensity and power really build from the mid-palate. This should amply repay mid-term cellaring.

Jacques-Frederic Mugnier

Family-run since the 19th century, the domaine is renowned for its refined, transparent expression of terroir, producing wines that emphasize purity, elegance, and aromatic finesse.

Under the thoughtful direction of Frédéric Mugnier, the estate combines meticulous vineyard work with a gentle, minimal-intervention approach in the cellar, resulting in wines celebrated for their harmony, precision, and timeless beauty.

Terroir

The Clos de la Maréchale, a historic monopole at the southern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges, is one of the appellation’s most distinctive Premier Cru vineyards. Nestled on gently sloping, east-facing terrain, it benefits from early morning sun and a cooler, microclimate that promotes steady, even ripening.

Its soils are a classic mix of limestone and clay with notable gravely components, offering both structure and drainage while retaining enough moisture to preserve freshness. This combination produces wines with a characteristic interplay of dark fruit, spice, and lifted floral notes, supported by firm yet elegant tannins. Clos de la Maréchale is known for its depth, finesse, and age-worthy balance, reflecting the power of Nuits-Saint-Georges tempered by the vineyard’s inherent refinement.
