E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2014

Ready — mature

La Mouline comes from a single parcel on the Côte Blonde — around 600 vines, with up to 11% Viognier co-fermented with the Syrah. The 2014 is a cooler vintage by Guigal standards, and the wine reflects that: more precise, less opulent than the warmer years, with the aromatic lift from the Viognier still intact. Dark fruit, violet, olive, iron. The tannins have resolved well over the past decade; the acidity keeps the finish long and clear. Drinking well now.

Reviews

Robert Parker - 97

Floral aromas accent sturdy notes of grilled meat and almost delicate notes of red berries in the open, approachable 2014 Cote Rotie La Mouline. Medium to full-bodied, it shows great purity and a supple, silky, classic feel. It’s built more on elegance and complexity than power, with those floral, herbal notes leaving a long, silky impression on the finish.

Jancis Robinson - 17.5

Rich nose with spice and flattering appeal. Sweet start with masses of tannin and almost spicy leather notes. Only medium weight. Not a blockbuster. Neat finish.

James Suckling - 95

One of the more approachable of the “La La”, Côte-Rôtie trio. This has a wealth of wet stones, pepper and mixed, wild berries. Cedary oak frames the palate nicely with a super-dark core of rich plums. Sweet mocha laces the dark-plum and chocolate finish.

Vinous - 95

Glass-staining ruby. Lively, intensely perfumed aromas of red and blue fruit preserves, Moroccan spices, potpourri and incense are sharpened by a smoky mineral nuance. Juicy and pure on the palate, displaying seductively sweet boysenberry and cherry liqueur flavors along with hints of candied violet and spicecake. The floral and spice notes return emphatically on the extremely long, penetrating finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of five-spice powder.

E. Guigal

E. Guigal was founded in Ampuis in 1946 and has been run by Marcel Guigal since the 1960s. The house is known for extended élevage — the single-vineyard La La wines spend over 40 months in new oak before release. La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque established Côte-Rôtie’s international reputation in the 1980s and remain among the most sought-after wines in the Northern Rhône. Production of La Mouline is around 600 cases per year.

Terroir

La Mouline is sourced entirely from the Côte Blonde, the southern sector of Côte-Rôtie. Where the Côte Brune is dominated by iron-rich, dark schist, the Côte Blonde has lighter, sandy schist and gneiss soils with a higher decomposed granite content. This gives wines with more aromatic lift and earlier accessibility — the floral character associated with La Mouline comes directly from this terroir, amplified by the co-fermented Viognier. The parcel is old-vined and steep; yields are extremely low.
