Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux 2015

Ready — mature

Drinking well now. The 2015 has moved beyond its primary phase and is showing the tertiary development this estate is known for — graphite, dried violet, dark plum, with the Loire’s characteristic herbaceous edge still present but integrated. Fine tannins, natural acidity, good length. The vintage’s warmth gives more generosity than cooler years from Les Poyeux, without compromising the estate’s restraint. Drink now–2045. Sourced in excellent condition.

Reviews

Decanter - 94

Another 2015 with a floral scent of violets and roses along with a blood-like iron element, on a foundation of brisk blackcurrant fruit. The tell-tale minty top-note comes to the fore after aeration, and the juicy palate is both fleshy and fresh, sustained by racy tannins. It has a vibrant finish with a salty tang.

Vinous - 93

Intense and full of depth. Dark ruby. Meaty, bloody nose, with spicy, green herb, and black pepper. Rich and dark on the palate with plum, black cherry, and licorice flavors. Very fine, spicy tannins throughout. Lean, lithe and dark on the finish with a note of espresso. Looking forward to opening this up over a couple of years.

Clos Rougeard

Clos Rougeard has been one of the reference points for Saumur-Champigny since the 1960s, shaped by the Foucault brothers and their uncompromising focus on limestone terroir and low yields. The estate works outside the mainstream — no concessions to fashion, no shortcuts in the cellar. Releases are small and demand consistently outpaces supply. What reaches the market is the result of a long and particular process — and it shows in the glass.

Terroir

Les Poyeux sits on some of the deepest tuffeau in Saumur-Champigny — the pale, porous limestone that defines the appellation’s finest sites. It drains efficiently, forces the vine to work, and imparts the mineral tension that distinguishes these wines from warmer, clay-dominant soils further from the river. The result is Cabernet Franc with structural precision: aromatic clarity, firm but fine tannins, and an acidity that gives the wines their capacity to age.

Private Access, Without the Noise

Beyond the public selection, I occasionally source wines available in very small quantities — offered privately, or never formally listed. Through the Club Grandcru WhatsApp channel, these bottles are shared directly and selectively: mature vintages, single parcels, and bottles that never reach the open market.
