Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 2020

Not ready

This Armand Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin matures earlier than the domaine’s premiers and grands crus. The 2020 vintage was warm and dry in the Côte de Nuits, with an early harvest and low yields. As a result, the wines show riper, darker fruit than the cooler years, held in check by fine tannins. For his Armand Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin 2020 expect dark berries, spice and forest floor, in a richer and rounder style.

Reviews

Jasper Morris - 91/94

A bright glowing purple. Completely effortless, a wonderful sense of class, with fruit that continues gracefully through to the back of the palate. Entirely red, nothing indiscreetly ripe, this is certainly the finest village Gevrey I have tasted from barrel chez Rousseau. Tasted Nov 2021

Vinous - 91

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a little more intensity and lifted compared to the Clos du Château, a touch more mineralité too. The palate is very well balanced, quite juicy and ripe but over excessively. Dark berry fruit laced with spice and it fans out wonderfully on the finish. Lovely.

Domaine Armand Rousseau

Domaine Armand Rousseau farms 15.33 hectares across Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis, of which 8.51 are grand cru. Since 2012 it also holds the vineyards of the Château de Gevrey-Chambertin, bottled separately as Clos du Château. The village cuvée, meanwhile, comes from parcels spread across the appellation, and oak is used sparingly. Eric Rousseau now runs the estate with his daughter Cyrielle.

Terroir

Village-level Gevrey-Chambertin sits below the premiers and grands crus, on the lower slope and the flatter ground towards the N74. The soils here are deeper than on the mid-slope, with more clay and alluvial material washed down from the combes, and they hold more water.

As a result, the wines are broader and darker-fruited than those from the thin limestone soils above. Because Rousseau’s parcels are spread across the appellation, the cuvée blends several of these soil types.
