Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph 2016

Ready — mature

Drink now until 2050, as this Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph has reached ten years and the 2016 vintage built wines for a long, even development. The season began cool and wet, then turned warm and dry, and the slow ripening produced a late harvest and medium-weight Syrah with fine tannins and lift. As a result, 2016 sits in contrast to the more powerful 2015. For this Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph 2016 expect smoke, olive, tobacco and dried flowers, with savoury development on the palate.

Reviews

Wine Advocate - 95

The 2016 Saint-Joseph from Pierre Gonon has gained power and depth since I last tasted it. Revealing a delicate, perfumed bouquet of dark cherries, black olives, tapenade and violet, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and precise, with a seamless texture and a fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, culminating in a long, energetic finish.

Vinous - 94

The 2016 Saint-Joseph is delicious, wafting from the glass with refined tobacco, iodine, earthy tones and dried flowers. Showing masterful equilibrium on the medium- to full-bodied palate alongside commendable savoriness, the 2016 is fully developed, settling the expression with effortless vivacity and thrust on the highly complex epilogue. This is classic Gonon at its finest.

Jeb Dunnuck - 93

The 2016 Saint Joseph has more of everything, with a saturated purple color, a rocking nose of dark fruits, bouquet garni, bay leaf, and violets, obvious minerality, full body, and the purity and elegance that’s the hallmark of exceptional winemaking. It’s already approachable but will keep for 10-15 years.

Domaine Pierre Gonon

Domaine Pierre Gonon works about 10 hectares of granite vineyards in Mauves, Tournon and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, the original heart of Saint-Joseph. Brothers Pierre and Jean joined the estate in 1988 and have farmed organically since 2004. In the cellar, the Syrah is partially destemmed, fermented with native yeasts and aged in older barrels, without new oak. Meanwhile, production stays small, at around 38,000 bottles a year across the range.

Terroir

Mauves lies on the right bank of the Rhône, facing the hill of Hermitage and sharing its granitic bedrock. The vines grow on steep terraces cut into decomposed granite, a thin, free-draining soil of low fertility that restricts vigour and yields. Because water drains quickly, the Syrah ripens evenly and keeps its freshness in warm years. As a result, the style leans towards pepper, olive and smoke rather than weight.

Private Access, Without the Noise

Beyond the public selection, I occasionally source wines available in very small quantities — offered privately, or never formally listed. Through the Club Grandcru WhatsApp channel, these bottles are shared directly and selectively: mature vintages, single parcels, and bottles that never reach the open market.
