Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine 2016

Ready — youthful

The Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine 2016 is entering its drinking window, with several years ahead of it — Vinous places it at 2023–2033. After the warmth of 2015, the 2016 vintage gave the Northern Rhône a cooler, more classical profile, and this bottling reflects that: dark fruit, smoked meat and exotic spice on the nose, with a mineral line that sharpens the palate and a tannic grip that builds on the finish.

The profile above follows Vinous (94 points) and Jancis Robinson’s tasting panel. What can be said with confidence is the position: a mature Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine at phenolic maturity, from a vintage that favours precision over power. Because production is small and allocated, mature vintages rarely surface in the market.

Vinous - 94

Opaque ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet displays aromas of dark fruit liqueur, potpourri, exotic spices and smoked meat. Palate-staining black currant, cherry preserve and spicecake flavors are sharpened by a vibrant mineral flourish that brings energy and lift. Puts on weight with air and finishes extremely long and smooth, with repeating minerality and building tannic grip.

Yves et Mathilde Gangloff

Yves Gangloff arrived in the Northern Rhône from Alsace and worked as a labourer at Domaine Delas before bottling his first vintage in 1992. The domaine remains small: 2.4 hectares in Côte-Rôtie, alongside parcels in Condrieu and Saint-Joseph.

La Barbarine, first produced in 1997, combines younger vines with parcels of at least fifty years old in Combard, Mollard and Côte Rozier. Moreover, since Mathilde Gangloff’s death in 2011, their children Loup and Elsa have managed the vineyards. Production is limited, and most bottles are spoken for on release.

Terroir

Gangloff’s parcels lie predominantly in the southern sector of Côte-Rôtie, across the lieux-dits Combard, Mollard and Côte Rozier. The slopes are steep and terraced, with soils of granite, gneiss and mica schist — free-draining and low in vigour.

Because this sector runs slightly cooler than the heart of the appellation, ripening is slower; as a result, the Syrah gains aromatic lift and a firm mineral line rather than sheer weight. In addition, a small proportion of co-fermented Viognier reinforces the perfume.

Private Access, Without the Noise

Beyond the public selection, I occasionally source wines available in very small quantities — offered privately, or never formally listed. Through the Club Grandcru WhatsApp channel, these bottles are shared directly and selectively: mature vintages, single parcels, and bottles that never reach the open market.
